We writers work alone to craft our ideas into stories, novels, essays, plays... that is, initially we work alone! But sooner or later, we must emerge from our self-imposed creative isolation and work with others. We need inspiration, guidance, advice, community, and friendship to nurture our work--and our very souls--on our creative journeys.

Here I provide links to my columns, articles, and courses about writing craft and getting the most out of your writing life, as well as to other resources I've found helpful on my writing journey.

My Columns and Articles for Writers
I write a regular column for Writer's Digest Magazine called "Level Up Your Writing (Life)."  In each column, I share a craft tip for a writing technique, and then relate that tip to how writers can get the most out of their writing lives. Occasionally, I write other pieces about the joys, challenges, and craft of writing. Here are some examples.

  • Managing Point of View (Part 1 of 3): Mythbusting
  • Managing Point of View (Part 2 of 3): Emotional Distance
  • Managing Point of View (Part 3 of 3): The Distance of Time
  • Seven Things I've Learned So Far

Other Resources

Sometimes we all need support along our writing journey--allies that can help us get the most out of our projects and, perhaps more importantly, the experience of creating those projects. That can mean hiring a professional editor for perspective and feedback when we've grown too close to our work to be objective, or to help us give it a polish before we submit it to agents, editors, or contests. Other times, we need a pick-me-up to keep going.

Fortunately professionals, podcasters, organizations and books abound to provide the sustenance and inspiration you might need.

The following is by no means an exhaustive list of resources. Once you start looking for writing resources, you'll keep finding more and more! But here are just a few of the resources I've discovered along my own journey as a writer and writing educator and advocate:

Editors for hire:
  • Christina Consolino
  • FoxPrint Editorial (Tiffany Yates Martin) --Visit this site to learn about FoxPrint services but also because Tiffany offers up lots of great information for writers--plenty of career and craft advice, and lists of even more resources!
  • MartinInk (Heather Martin)
  • Writer's Digest 2nd Draft Critique and Editing Services

Editorial Freelancers Association -- Great if you'd like to research even more developmental editors and copy editors for hire.

Podcast:

I enjoyed chatting with Rachael on her podcast, for Episode 323: "Jess Montgomery on the Troll Dolls Stuck in Your Writing Couch"

Craft and Inspiration Books:
  • Beginnings, Middles, and Ends (Nancy Kress)
  • Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear (Elizabeth Gilbert)
  • Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World (Cal Newport)
  • Description (Monica Wood)
  • Intuitive Editing: A Creative & Practical Guide to Revising Your Writing (Tiffany Yates Martin)
  • On Writing (Stephen King)
  • Save the Cat! Writes a Novel (Jessica Brody)
  • The Writer's Journey (Chris Vogler)
  • Writing and Selling Your Mystery Novel (Hallie Ephron)
